Dear Helenna

Didn't see you at the cricket did I?

Don't you think it's time you showed your face?

Did you send me a card today?

This is not a trick question and you're not in trouble.... just let me
know yes or no. If yes, I'd like to have a chat - perhaps over
coffee or dinner?

Kind Regards

Ben

I am logged on now, so we can speak now briefly - although I have to
get to the library sometime soon to check some references.

My concern is that you think you've upset me when you haven't.

Would you like to go out to lunch or dinner tomorrow or Sunday (my
treat)?

Dear Helenna

My email obviously excited you as I have just checked my emails and
have about eight from you - I came back from the library at about
5.00pm and there were no emails from you so I assumed you had logged
out and I went home.

Please do not read anything into my contacting you - I just want us
to sit down and have a friendly chat and to find out why it is you've
acquired this crush on me - I am very flattered but certainly haven't
just decided that I'm going to chat you up for the sake of it -
though I think it would be nice if we can get to know each other.

You should understand that if I have discouraged you from writing to
me or thinking about me in the past it is because it would be
unethical and unprofessional for a member of staff to take advantage
of a student (or, more importantly, be suspected of taking advantage
of a student - however unfounded those suspicions might be). Academia
is a very small world - people gossip - and many good people's
careers have been ruined because they responded to or encouraged
students to develop crushes on them.

I am going to the gym now and will be back in the office at 6.00pm,
after which I shall study for a while. You are welcome to call me
over the weekend here at the office (874741) or to email me. It would
probably be helpful if you can let me know your telephone number and
your REAL NAME (!) so that I could call you - then we could arrange
to meet.

Kind Regards.

.... not only excited but insecure also. But there's no need to feel
that you're annoying me or getting me angry at all because you're
not - I'm very, very flattered by your interest. I can't imagine why
you like me but I think its lovely. And believe me, when you have to
work the lonely hours I do, it comforting to know someone, somewhere
is thinging about you.

I am in the office now (I take it you've got a PC at home).

Would you like to go to dinner tonight? Yes or No? Either
call me or email me right away (874741).

Dear Helenna

Me thinks you're out of your depth and playing for time.

If you genuinely want to have a chat then you should accept my
invitation. On the other hand, if you want to prevaricate over the net
I shall fall silent again.

I usually get hungry round about 8.00pm. What are you going to do?

Prevaricate or come clean and meet me. The internet is not the right
medium through which to get to know someone properly.

Why is this important? I wasn't aware I'd proposed! But for the
record, single and loving it.

Helenna

This is not a date - this is just a chance to get to know eachother.

That said - after all these emails I think it's high time you showed
what you're made of and made good on all your innuendos: or are you
only brave on the net?

I shan't ask you again and the hour of 8 is approaching!

Well then, if you didn't send me a card - why on earth did you start
writing to me.

Come on Helenna - come clean and answer a few questions:-

- what's your name?

_ where do you live?

- what are you doing?

Can you really expect me to take you seriously without this
information?
